The relationship of crude oil price and gasoline price is summarized 'Rockets and Feathers'. But earlier studies didn't discover the asymmetry between the prices of crude oil and gasoline yet in Korea. This paper is interested in two points about why those prices didn't prove to be asymmetric in Korea. One is that the price of crude oil has to be converted from the value of the dollar to that of the Korean won. And another is the result of asymmetry test can depend on the periodicity of data. The result of the asymmetry test shows that the relationship of crude oil and gasoline price is asymmetric in weekly data. In the case of the monthly data, the total effect of positive and negative price changes was not significantly different but the speed of the adjustment was not asymmetric.
본 연구는 Dubai유 가격에 대한 휘발유 가격의 비대칭성 검정을 목적으로 한다. 해외 연구의 대부분은 원유 가격과 석유 제품 사이의 관계를 ‘Rockets and Feathers’로 요약해 왔으나, 국내 연구의 경우 휘발유 가격의 비대칭성을 발견하지 못하였다. 본 연구는 이에 대한 원인을 크게 분석 데이터의 기간과 원화로 표시된 원유 가격의 두 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 Dubai유 가격을 환율을 적용하여 원화로 환산한 후 비대칭성 검정을 수행하였다. 이는 정유사가 휘발유 가격을 결정할 때, Dubai유 가격과 환율을 각각 독립변수로 생각하기보다는 오히려 원화로 표시된 Dubai유 가격을 독립변수로 생각할 가능성이 높기 때문이다. 분석 결과 주별 데이터의 경우 반응 속도 및 증감 폭 모두에 있어 비대칭성을 발견할 수 있었던 반면, 월별 데이터의 경우 증감 폭에서는 비대칭성을 발견하였지만 반응 속도에서는 비대칭성을 발견할 수 없었다.
